Our Story

Āyat began with a word.

Two women, meeting in a city that collects people from everywhere. Different homes, different languages spoken at the dinner table, different roads to Dubai. One faith held in common.

The word

آيةĀyah

It means a verse of the Qur'an. It also means a sign in creation: the sea, the mountains, the garden, the light, the night. One word for the text and for the world, as though both were written by the same hand.

What was missing

We kept returning to that word. And we kept noticing what was missing from the jewellery we saw: when a piece reached for faith, it reached literally. A word spelled out. A shape borrowed. Something worn to be read by other people.

We wanted the opposite. Not scripture worn as a message, but the behaviour of a sign held in metal: how light moves through a niche, how two seas meet without mixing, how a mountain rises and anchors at the same time.

The rule the house still keeps

The verse stays where it belongs, in the text: cited beside the piece, never engraved on it.

Each collection begins with one sign. What you wear is not the verse. It is what the verse asks you to look at.

Maison Ayat packaging in green and gold

Green and gold

Green was not a design decision.

In the Qur'an, green is the colour of the Garden. Its people are clothed in green silk; they recline on cushions of green. The gardens themselves are described as mudhāmmatān: green to the point of darkness. It is the promised colour.

It is also the colour of the sign in front of us. Rain falls, and the earth turns green. The same colour: one held in the text, one arriving every spring.

So the maison is green and gold. Green for the Garden. Gold for the light.

A gift, without a speech

Let the sign say it.

The hardest part of a gift is not choosing the object. It is saying the thing. Choosing a piece for someone means choosing which part of creation you associate with them, and handing it over without a speech.

  • بحر

    Baḥr, the sea

for the one who keeps returning.

  • نور

    Nūr, the light

for the one who makes a room easier to be in.

  • جنة

    Jannah, the garden

for the one who begins again.

  • جبال

    Jibāl, the mountains

    for the one who holds.

  • ليل

    Layl, the night

for the one who is quiet, and deep.

A ring is a line that agreed to return to itself.

Every sign we work from behaves the same way: the sea, the light, the garden. Nothing holds still. Everything comes again. The circle is simply the smallest form that does it too.

The House Code

Maximal detail.
Minimal heaviness.

The feeling of standing inside a mosque, translated into metal.

  1. ١

    Pierced, so light passes through

    Openwork over solid mass.

  2. ٢

    Complexity, but ordered

Detail for the eye, rhythm to calm it.

  3. ٣

    Built around emptiness

Richness at the edges, space at the centre.

  4. ٤

    Everything lifts

    Domes, arches, rising forms.

  5. ٥

    Never depicts

    Evoked through form and light.

We render the world inside the word.
